Ashtray, Balthus’s Ashtray

1,600.00

Katerina Jebb is a British-born, Paris-based photographic artist. She has carved out her own niche using a digital flatbed scanner to create intriguing and often ghostly imagery.

Jebb’s trompe-l’oeil ashtray is an homage to Balthus, the Polish-French artist who died in 2001. It is a faithful reproduction of his actual ashtray, featuring the remains of the last eight cigarettes he ever smoked. The image was captured by Jebb’s scanner in 2009, when she made an inventory of the painter’s untouched studio. It is transferred to the upper surface of the tray, bringing all the messy reality of nicotine-fuelled creativity— with none of the stale smell.
